Licensed under the auspices of the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA)
An investigation can become particularly difficult when the people involved work closely together, the allegations involve senior employees, or the potential consequences are significant.
Even where an employer has capable HR professionals, there are situations where conducting the investigation internally can create actual or perceived conflicts of interest.
Engaging an independent workplace investigator puts the fact-finding process in the hands of someone outside your organisation.
This can be particularly valuable where:
The more serious the allegations and potential consequences, the more important a fair, impartial and thorough investigation process becomes.
Our Auckland workplace investigators can investigate a wide range of employment matters, including:
We can also undertake workplace culture reviews where an employer needs to better understand wider concerns, behaviours or issues affecting its organisation.
For more information about our expertise, approach and nationwide service, visit our workplace investigations page.
Every investigation is different, so the process should reflect the allegations, circumstances and agreed Terms of Reference.
Typically, Teesdale Associates will receive the relevant Terms of Reference and documentation before developing an investigation plan and gathering further evidence.
The investigator may then interview the complainant, respondent and relevant witnesses. Interviews may be conducted face-to-face in Auckland or remotely where appropriate. Recorded interviews are transcribed, and relevant information is provided to the parties as part of a fair process.
Once the evidence has been gathered, the investigator analyses that information and makes findings of fact. A draft report is provided to the complainant and respondent for review and comment before the final report is prepared for the employer.
Importantly, our role is to investigate and establish the facts – not to decide what disciplinary action should be taken. That decision remains with the employer.
The timeframe depends on factors such as the number and complexity of allegations, the volume of evidence, witness availability and the number of people who need to be interviewed.
As a general guide, many independent workplace investigations take approximately two to four weeks, although complex matters can take considerably longer.
Teesdale Associates focuses on progressing investigations efficiently without compromising the thoroughness and fairness required for a robust process.
When an employment issue could have serious consequences for both your people and your organisation, you need more than someone who can simply conduct interviews.
You need an investigator capable of managing a sensitive process impartially and making sound findings based on the available evidence.
Teesdale Associates offers Auckland employers:
Our investigators are also members of the AWI (Association of Workplace Investigators) and follow recommended AWI investigation processes.
Generally, someone providing private investigation services in New Zealand must hold the appropriate licence under the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010. Practising solicitors are exempt from the licensing requirement when carrying out this work.
Teesdale Associates’ investigators are licensed professionals under the PSPLA framework, providing employers with additional confidence when engaging us to undertake an independent investigation.
A poorly managed workplace investigation can create additional problems rather than resolving the original issue. When allegations are serious, sensitive or potentially contentious, bringing in an experienced independent investigator can help protect the integrity of the process.
